Circumnavigate the regal Annapurna massif, cross the deepest gorge in the world and go across the highest mountain pass in Nepal! Do you feel the adventurer in you getting enticed? Annapurna Circuit Trek is a dream of the avid adventurers and mountain lovers, and rightfully so.

This trek takes you through practically every variety of landscape that Nepal is famous for, from subtropical forests and alpine woodlands to semi-desert highlands. You will be ascending the Marshyangdi River Valley, walking through picturesque villages like Chame, Pisang and Manang, offering prayers at the Temple of Muktinath, the Lord of Salvation. You will cross the Kali Gandaki gorge (the deepest gorge at the depth of 5571m) and pass the Thorong La Pass (at the altitude of 5416m). You will greet imposing mountains like Annapurna I (8091m), Gangapurna (7455m) and Annapurna III (7555m), the world’s eighth highest peak Mt. Manaslu (8163m), the world’s seventh highest Mt. Dhaulagiri (8167m), Mt. Machhapuchhre ‘Fish-Tail’ (6997m). And many more – yes, you read that right!

The route has plenty of teahouses and lodges which provide nice accommodation facilities – basic, but that is to be expected in such rural terrain. The best seasons to do this trek are spring (March, April, May, June) and autumn (September, October, November, December).

Itinerary

Day 1Arrival in Kathmandu (1,300m/4,264ft)

Upon your arrival, a team member representing Unleash Nepal Treks & Adventure will pick you up from the airport and take you to the hotel. In the evening, you will attend a welcome dinner, where you will be served authentic Nepalese cuisine that will introduce you to Nepal’s food culture, at the hotel hosted by Unleash Nepal Treks & Adventure. You will stay the night in Kathmandu.

Day 2Kathmandu: Sightseeing and trek Preparation

We will have a guided tour of several of the most historical and spiritual attractions of Kathmandu, which are are listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites. We will be visiting Durbar Square, sacred Hindu temple Pashupatinath, the famous Swayambhunath (also known as ‘Monkey Temple’) and Boudhanath, which is one of the largest stupas in the world. Afternoon, We will get our equipment checked at night by our leader, get and be introduced to our fellow trekkers and discuss our trip. We stay the night in Kathmandu.

Day 3Drive to Khudi (800m/2,624ft): 7- 8 hours

We will start our journey by travelling into the hills along the Trishuli River. We will be graced by the presence of beautiful terraced farms and beautiful huts. Upon reaching Mugling, we will drive towards Pokhara. On our way to Pokhara, we will come across a place called Dumre, from where we leave the previous trail and head northwards to Besisahar. A half-an-hour drive from Besisahar will take us to Khudi. This will the starting point of our trek.

Day 4Khudi to Sirung (2200m/7216 ft): 6 - 7 hours

We will start our trek by crossing a few suspension bridges and waterfalls. It will also include a number of ascends and descends across subtropical forest. At first, the walk will be gradual but a steeper trail follows gradually. The mountains will seem a lot closer from Khudi. Before reaching Sirung village, we will pass an ethnic Tamang settlement of Taranche. From Sirung, we will be graced in the presence of the close-up views of Nadi Chuli and Manaslu mountains.

Day 5Sirung to Jagat (1,300m/4265ft): 6 - 7 hours

Our journey to Jagat from Sirung will be relatively easy. On the forest trail, we will spot a variety of birds. We will pass through several small villages along with a few temples on our way. We will cross a suspension bridge over Sangu Khola at Mipra then again at Syange over Marshyangdi River. Our trail will move alongside Marshyangdi River. We will cross another bridge before reaching our destination, Jagat.

Day 6Jagat to Dharapani (1,960m/6,430ft): 7-8 hours

We will be moving down from Jagat until we reach the river and continue through the forest. Further ascends from here leads to sharp cliffs facing the riverbank. After crossing a suspension bridge, we make a steep ascend towards the slippery and physically challenging path to Sattale. On treading along a succession of rock-strewn trails, we will walk down to a grassy riverbank that will lead to Tal. As we make our way away from Tal, the path starts becoming rugged and winding. Then we will approach steeply-forested village of Karte. We will finally reach Dharapani after crossing a suspension bridge.

Day 7Dharapani to Chame (2,710m/8,891ft): 5 - 6 hours

On our way to Chame, the headquarters of Manang district, we will walk through a few forested ridges. We will admire the outstanding views of the Himalayas including Lamjung Himal, Annapurna II and Annapurna IV (7,525m) throughout our journey. We will come across small hot springs, where we can dip in and relax our aching body. We stay the night in Chame.

Day 8Chame to Pisang (3,300m/10824ft): 5 - 6 hours

We will walk through a steep and narrow path through a dense forest. It will bring us to the dramatic 1500m high curved rock face rising from the river. After passing the rock, the valley opens up with majestic vistas. Paungda Danda, a massive sloping rock face risen over 1500m above the trail, will stand right where the valley starts to widen.

Day 9Pisang to Manang: 6 - 7 hours

Amongst the two trails to Manang, we will follow the trail that takes us to Upper Pisang via Geru. This trail is sure to provide us with excellent views of beautiful landscapes and the mountains including Annapurna and Pisang. We will begin to note a change in landscape, vegetation and a harsh environment that the cold and dry climate will create. We stay the night in Manang.

Day 10Manang: Acclimatization day

We will keep ourselves fit for the trail that follows with a short hike to either Bhojo Gumba or Gangapurna Lake. If our body permits, we can even hike to Vraga Village. We can visit the Himalayan Rescue Association here, which will give us some idea about Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS). We stay the night in Manang.

Day 11Manang to Yak Kharka (4,110m/13,484ft): 3 - 4 hours

The trail crossed a stream, climbs to a village of Tenki, and then continues to climb out of the Marshyangdi Valley turning north-west up of the valley of Jarsang Khola, from Manang village. The trail will follow this valley northward, passing through a few pastures, a scrub of juniper trees, as it steadily gains elevation. The trail passes near the small village of Ghunsa. From here, the trail goes through meadows where the horses and yaks graze. Upon crossing a small river on a wooden bridge, the trail passes an ancient old Mani wall and reaches another small village of Yak Kharka. A small but gradual ascend is the key to avoid altitude problems.

Day 12Yak Kharka to Thorong Phedi (4,600m/15,092ft): 3 - 4 hours

From here, it is an uphill walk to Thorang Phedi. After a short walk, we will cross a suspension bridge and reach the village of Ledar. Furthermore, we ascend and pass through towering cliffs before reaching Thorang Phedi. This is the last village before Thorang La. In this trip, we will be rewarded by some of the best views of Mt. Gundang, Mt. Syagang, Thorung Peak and Mt. Khatungkan. We stay the night in Thorang Phedi.

Day 13Thorong Phedi to Muktinath (3,800m/12,467ft) via Thorong La pass (5416m/17764ft): 7 - 8 hours

The main objective of the day will be crossing Thorang La pass. We will cross the pass from east-to-west, which is the easier and safest direction. We will be waking up at around 3 in the morning and walk up the mountain. Our journey will be worth it when we finally make it to the top. We can take a few photographs before heading to Muktinath Valley at the foot of the Thorang La pass. We stay the night in Muktinath

Day 14Muktinath to Marpha (2,670m/8,760ft): 4 - 5 hours

In the morning, we will pay a quick visit to Vishnu Temple and a Gompa. We will start our descent from Ranipauwa village down the steep hillside. We make our way towards Kagbeni and then to Jomson, and finally arrive at Marpha. The trail that will follow today will be quite difficult, as we trek above Kali Gandaki River, the world’s deepest gorge. The barren landscape of this area will resemble Tibet. Marpha, being the apple capital of Nepal, is famous for various reasons. The apples from Marpha can be used for different items. The local apple brandy of Marpha is widely famous across Nepal. We stay the night in Marpha.

Day 15Marpha to Kalopani (2,530 m/8,300 ft): 5 - 6 hours

We will be taking a new route from Marpha to Kalopani via Chokhopani village. We will be coming across traditional villages of ethnic Thakali people. We will get to absorb an excellent panoramic view of Dhaulagiri, Tukuche, Nilgiri, Fang and Annapurna I mountains. We will also get to see beautiful apple gardens. From Chokhopani, we will continue towards Kokhethanti. We will cross a river and come across the newly constructed road site before ending up at Kalopani. We stay the night at Kalopani.

Day 16Kalopani to Tatopani (1,200m/3,937ft): 6 - 7 hours

We will begin to walk downhill. First, we will cross a bridge at Ghasa. As we make our day down, we will see ourselves into subtropical forests. Our trail will continue along Rupse Chahara (waterfall). We will continue our descent the east bank from Kopchepani via Garpar to a bridge at Dana. We will get to see a powerhouse that supplies electricity in the area. After we reach Tatopani, we can relax ourselves and have a hot spring bath. We stay the night at Tatopani.

Day 17Tatopani to Ghorepani (2,850m/9,350ft): 7 - 8 hours

We leave Kali Gandaki and head upwards Ghar Khola valley. The trail will lead us through farmlands with mountains surrounding all around. We reach beautiful bright red rhododendron forest passing through the villages of Shikha and Chitre. Further walk takes us to Ghorepani, a beautiful village located at the top of the ridge. We stay the night in Ghorepani.

Day 18Ghorepani to Poon Hill to Tadapani (2,700m/8,860ft): 6 - 7 hours

We will make an early morning ascend along the steep trail to our destination, Poon Hill (3,210m), to catch the sunrise over the Himalayas. It is a fantastic pint to observe and enjoy the amazing views of Mustang, Pokhara and more than 20 of the highest mountains (including the close view of Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges). The peaks covered with snow will surround us with glowing morning light. We will take photographs and have coffee or tea or hot beverage and return back to Ghorepani. After breakfast, we will be heading east and climb a nearby bridge. We start our descent through the red rhododendron forests, pass by thrilling waterfalls along the way and reach our destination where we will be spending our night, Tadapani.

Day 19 Tadapani to Pokhara (827m/2,789ft) via Ghandruk: 5 - 6 hours trek, 1 hour drive

We make a steep descent through the forests, from Tadapani. This part of the trek will comprise of amazing rhododendron trees, which when in bloom, turn the forests into amazing colorful garden. By afternoon, we also get to enjoy the blossoming cherry on the slope on the other side of the ravine. We enter Ghandruk village, a slope settlement with stone houses mostly inhabited by Gurungs. We will acquaint ourselves with rich cultural traditions of Gurungs at the Gurung Museum in Ghandruk, after enjoying stunning close-up view of Fishtail, Annapurna South and Hiunchuli mountains. We will continue to trek to Nayapul, from where we will be driving to Pokhara. We stay the night in Pokhara.

Day 20Drive from Pokhara to Kathmandu: 5-6 hours

After breakfast, we will bid farewell to the lake city of Pokhara and drive to Kathmandu. Upon reaching Kathmandu, we will take the rest of the day off. There will be a farewell dinner hosted by Unleash Nepal Treks & Adventure in the evening to celebrate our success.

Day 21Final departure

Our journey and time together in Nepal comes to an end today! A representative from Unleash Nepal Treks & Adventure will drop us off at the airport approximately 3 hours before our flight.
