Manaslu region was opened for the trekkers only in 1995 which has thrilling adventures. Larkya la pass (5,106m) and Tsum was just opened in 2008 known as the Hidden Valley a land of monasteries and hamlets with a totally Tibetan population. It lies in the northern part of Gorkha, Nepal located in Nepal-Tibet border. The region lies within Nepal, the Buddhism influenced region is a world of its own as they believe in, imaging and settled here during the early 16th century consequently their speech, dress and customs are exclusively similar to both Nepales and Tibetans. With the Budhi Gandaki River, the region known as ‘Nup Ri’ meaning Western Mountain is directly linked to in the North of Nepal this region is sensational and iconic that you haven’t imagined anywhere in the world. Tsum valley is less expose and the people have their own way of lifestyle and practice, which may be quite surprising for many trekkers. The Tsum Valley and Manaslu area are full of imminent mountains, passes, deep gorges, glacier lakes, different cultural villages, gompas, and mani walls.

The trek to Tsum Valley takes you into the majestic, surroundings, and an attractive backdrop of the Ganesh Himal, Sringi Himal, and Boudha Ranges. This serene Himalayan valley is rich in ancient art, culture, religion, and belief. Trekkers will be experiencing trekking through a dense forest, terraced fields and hill villages situated at the base of a conical hill against the main slope of Ganesh Himal. The place is really alluring for the trekkers. As we continue our trek to the main Manaslu trail for the Tsum valley, we get an exciting feeling of entering the hidden valley. While on the trek, we also pass through the alpine forests, glacial rivers, and enjoy the warm hospitality of the people.

Itinerary

Day 1Arrival in Kathmandu (1,300m/4,264ft)

Upon your arrival, a team member representing Unleash Nepal Treks & Adventure will pick you up from the airport and take you to the hotel. In the evening, you will attend a welcome dinner, where you will be served authentic Nepalese cuisine that will introduce you to Nepal’s food culture, at the hotel hosted by Unleash Nepal Treks & Adventure. You will stay the night in Kathmandu.

Day 2Kathmandu: Sightseeing and trek Preparation

We will have a guided tour of several of the most historical and spiritual attractions of Kathmandu, which are are listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites. We will be visiting Durbar Square, sacred Hindu temple Pashupatinath, the famous Swayambhunath (also known as ‘Monkey Temple’) and Boudhanath, which is one of the largest stupas in the world. Afternoon, We will get our equipment checked at night by our leader, get and be introduced to our fellow trekkers and discuss our trip. We stay the night in Kathmandu.

Day 3Drive to Barpak (2,000m/6,560ft): 6-7 Hours

Our journey starts with a drive from Kathmandu into the western to Gorkha, Nepal. We take a jeep to Barpak village which is located up on the hilltop with beautiful views on the way. We stay the night at Barpak.

Day 4Barpak to Laprak (2,200m/7,216ft): 6-7 Hours

We trek through the mountains east to the Budhi Gandaki River. A few hours of uphill climb takes us to the pass of Gupsi Dada (3000m) from where we will enjoy the panoramic views of Buddhi, Shringi, Ganesh Himal and the Langtang range. Finally, we move downhill to Laprak. We stay the night at Laprak.

Day 5Laprak to Khorlabeshi (875m/2,870ft): 7-8 Hours

Trekking east to Budhi Gandaki River, we go through Laprak crossing a suspension bridge. We will enjoy the magnificent view of Manaslu Himal and the other Himalayas with a steep climb to Khorlabeshi. We stay the night at Khorlabeshi.

Day 6Khoralabeshi to Jagat (1,410m/4,625ft): 6 Hours

After some ups and downs, we will reach the hot spring also known as Tatopani. From there we climb over crossing the Budhi Gandaki River to Dobhan. We will be walking for some hours crossing the Dobhan Khola and Yaru Khola with the views of a waterfall. Finally, trekking along to the Budhi Gandaki River and climbing stone stairs takes us towards the village of Jagat. We stay the night at Jagat.

Day 7Jagat to Philim (1,590m/5,215ft): 3 Hours

Today, we climb over a rocky narrow trail to Salleri, from where we make our descent to Setibas. The trail widens then continues up to Ghatta Khola a small and colourfull village. We continue our walk to a long suspension bridge. We walk uphill an hour to Philim, a large Gurung village with a beautiful view of the hills. We stay the night at Philim.

Day 8Philim to Chumling (2,363m/7,775ft): 6-7 Hours

We walk north across a forest with the views of the narrowing valley. After going through Ekle Bhatti and entering the pine tree forests, the trail descends down to the path leading to Tsum Valley. Our walk on the way will be very enjoyable with pine and rhododendron forests, and the gorgeous views of Himalchuli Mountains to give us company. Passing through Lokpa towards the north, to Ghumlong, and crossing the Shiar Khola finally takes us to Chumling. We visit the Chumling gompa, which is also an old Gompa of the village. We stay the night at Chumling.

Day 9Chumling to Chokhangparo (3,010m/9,903ft): 5-6 Hours

The trek starts with crossing the suspension bridge with great views of Ganesh Himal. After crossing the bank of the river, we walk past Rainjham to Serpu Khola. Upon entering the hidden valley of Tsum and a steep climb, we reach Chhokangparo village full of refreshing the views of Himalchuli (7,893m). We stay the night at Chokhangparo.

Day 10Chokhangparo to Nile (3,361m/11,058ft) Milarepa Cave: 6-7 Hours

After climbing above Chokhangparo, we must be careful of altitude problems as we have crossed 3,000m. As we walk past Lamagaon to Rachen Gompa, we will be climbing up again to Milarepa’s Cave then we cross Shiar Khola. We walk through the villages of Phurbe and Pangdun. After crossing the village of Chhule, we climb upstream and cross the bridge to Nile. We stay the night at Nile.

Day 11Nile to Bhajyo (Chhekya) (4,030m/13,218ft): 4 Hours

We take a walk to the west bank of the valley through the Tibetan landscapes and climb up to the Mu Gompa. Through Mu Gompa, we climb uphill to Bhajyo and observe a decent view of the Tibetan peaks as well as the Ganesh Himal range. Bhajyo, a remote area with none local houses, is home for some yak farmhouses only. We will explore the area with the exclusive view of the mountain ranges. We stay the night at Bhajyo.

Day 12Rest at Bhajyo (Cheekya)

We acclimatization our bodies, sightseeing, and exploring the highland around Bhajyo. From Bhajyo we can also enjoy the magnificent views of Ngula Dhojyang pass as well as the glaciers of the Yamdro Valley.

Day 13Bhajyo to Rachen Gompa (3240m/10627ft): 6 Hours

We trek down to Rachen Gumba, a nunnery in the Shiar Khola Valley. The nunnery is of grave importance to the people and it is also one of the largest in this region. The splendidly painted graffiti of the Buddhist mural can be viewed all over the Gumba.

Day 14Rachen Gompa to Chumje (3,230m/10,595ft): 5-6 Hours

We will be returning back to the Manaslu Trekking trail moving south until we reach Chhokangparo. Dropping below from Chhokangparo on the path we travelled earlier in the trek will take us to a small gompa near Gho. Catching the northern route in the lower part of Tsum Valley, we trek towards Chumje via Yaju. We stay the night at Chumje.

Day 15Chumje for Bihi (3,130m/10,266ft): 4-5 Hours

Today we trek to Bihi going through the lower Tsum Valley with the views of the mountain range. Passing from Dorjon Kharka village, we will cross the large suspension bridge (301m) in the main valley of the Manaslu Budhi Gandaki River. We will reach Rana after some rest and lovely view of the waterfall and Budhi Gandaki River. After that, we head to Bihi where we stay the night.

Day 16Bihi to Namrung (2,540m/8,331ft): 6 Hours

As we have again joined the main Manaslu trail, the most part of the present day’s trek will be in flat terrain trail. After some stress-free walk, the trail moves uphill through the forest towards Namrung. From Namrung, magnificent views of Manaslu can be enjoyed. We stay the night at Namrung.

Day 17Namrung to Lho (3,180m/10,430 ft): 4 Hours

Today our trek begins to climb through the forest to Lihi. A spectacular rise of the Ganesh Himal can be viewed with the beautiful hills from the edge of the trail on the way to Sho. After climbing we reach to Lho campsite on a ridge enjoying the beauty of nature and can be a part of it. We stay the night at Lho.

Day 18Lho to Samagaon (3,530m/11,578 ft): 5-6 Hours

The Budi Gandaki can be viewed far down but we enjoy the walk in the shady forest. A short climb to a plateau and the village of Shyala. Tremendous mountains encompass us, Himal Chuli and Peak 29 (Ngadi Chuli) to the left, Manaslu and enormous ice sheets straight ahead, other snow summits to the right, at the far end of the valley stands Ganesh Himal, where we have just come from. Overlooking the valley stands the well-known monastery of Sama Gaon showing us its true beauty. Sama Gaon lies at the foot of Manaslu surrounded by mountains. We stay the night at Samagaon.

Day 19Sama to Samdo (3,860m/12,660 ft): 4-5 Hours

We move downhill towards the Budi Gandaki and follow it to a bridge over a side stream. The path leads to the Manaslu Base camp. The Larkya la Trail passes several mani walls in the open field with the river and the valley begins with mountain background. It is an easy trail. Into the forest, we drop off and cross the Budhi Gandaki on a wooden bridge and climb steeply between the Yak farms. Walking uphill for some time we can see a large white kani, finally passing through the kani and just above the stares we enter to Samdo. We stay the night at Samdo.

Day 20Samdo - High Camp (Ekle Bhatti) (4,460m/14,628ft): 5 Hours

We continue our walk down the edge of Budi Gandaki, cross the wooden bridge and begin walking upward. We cross two streams and witness the Larkya Glacier. We go around the valley of the Salka Khola and climb uphill again and passing through the stone guest house (4450 m) which is also known as Dharmshala and Larkya Phedi. This is the last valley before the Larkya pass and have a rest here to prepare for tomorrow’s crossing of the famous and most awaited Larkya Pass. We stay the night at High Camp.

Day 21High Camp to Bimthang (3,590m/11,811ft): 7- 8 Hours

Starting our day early, we walk across the moraines of the glacier as soon as possible, making a gradual ascent that becomes steeper overtime and full of snow only in the last section to the pass. From the pass, there are outstanding views of Himlung Himal, Cheo Himal, Kangguru and the huge Annapurna II. After the spectacular views from the top of the pass and the highest point of our trek, we will be enjoying our downhill sleeper trail to Bimtang with an extream trail of the trek will always be challenging. We stay the night at Bimthang.

Day 22Rest day at Bimthang

Today we will enjoy our time at Bhimthang, a village near the river with mountain surroundings and with plain land. We rest which will prove a blessing for the tired muscles with a peaceful environment. We will also explore the area surrounding Bimthang as well the cultural life of the mountain people. We stay the night at Bhimthang.

Day 23Bimthang to Dharapani (1,860m/6,100ft): 6-7 Hours

We will descend to greater height today through rhododendron forests, to Karche, the highest cultivating place in the valley. Then we descend to the village of Gho. While staying on the north bank of the river, we trek into Tilje. We then leave Tilje Village and cross the Dudh Khola via a wooden bridge back to the northern side of the Dudh Khola all the way to Dharapani. We stay the night at Dharapani.

Day 24Dharapani to Ghermu (1,100m/3,608ft): 7 hrs

The remainder of our trek meets the trails of the first couple of days of the Annapurna Circuit Trek. We move towards the Marsyandi River and cross a suspension bridge. Trekking to a flat valley to the village of Tal right at the foot of a large waterfall with a magnificent view, we continue our trek through Chyamje along the river and towards reaching Jagat. We then go through the Marshyangdi valley crossing the river walk beside the river to Ghermu. We stay the night at Ghermu.

Day 25Ghermu to Besisahar (800m/2,625 ft): 4 Hours

Marsyandi valley starts to open up and we start seeing villages located at very high hillsides. These villages are the work of old-aged Nepalese farmers. On our way, we cross several interesting villages, then we walk on a flat part alongside the bank of the Marsyandi River. The last walk of the trail to reach Besi Sahar, a dusty and busy place which marks the end of our trek and the beginning of the city with a big market.

Day 26Drive Besi Sahar to Kathmandu: 7-8 Hours

As our trek has ended but we have more adventure ahead as we drive back to Kathmandu along the banks of the Marsyangdi and Trishuli rivers with splendid views of green hills, mountains, farming terraces and villages on both sides of the road. Upon our arrival in Kathmandu, we will be escorted back to our hotel. We can enjoy the day freely, go shopping, or explore any landmarks we might have missed during our first day in Kathmandu. To celebrate our wonderful journey, we will have a farewell dinner in the evening. We stay overnight in Kathmandu.

Day 27Final departure

Our journey and time together in Nepal comes to an end today! A representative from Unleash Nepal Treks & Adventure will drop us off at the airport approximately 3 hours before our flight.
